A 23-year-old man faces a number of charges for allegedly forcing a 16-year-old girl to work as a prostitute.

The announcement of the arrest comes following an interaction between a York police officer and the victim in Markham Thursday afternoon.

According to police, the officer noticed the girl outside a hotel on Cochrane Drive while conducting a general foot patrol shortly before 5 p.m.

The girl told the officer that she was afraid of a man.

Subsequent investigation, police said, revealed that the girl had been forced to work as a prostitute.

In a release issued Friday afternoon, police identified a suspect arrested in connection with the case.

Investigators believe there may be additional victims who have not come forward.
