A mother and her newborn are doing fine after an unexpected arrival in the departures lounge at Pearson International Airport Sunday evening.

According to reports from the scene, a pregnant woman was waiting for a flight to Edmonton at the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge when her water broke in the washroom around 6:30 p.m.

A doctor who was also waiting in the lounge for a flight came and helped the woman as she went into labour.

Paramedics also came to the scene and said the baby was born healthy at the airport.

Both the mother and the newborn were doing well, Peel Paramedic Services said. However they were both taken to Etobicoke General Hospital to be checked over.

There was no word on when the two would continue on to Edmonton.
