Toronto Fire Services says a couple of their two-year-old child were rescued from an Etobicoke home Wednesday morning after suffering from what appeared to be carbon monoxide poisoning.

Officials told CP24 that firefighters were called to a home on West Wareside Road, near Renforth Drive and Rathburn Road, after a member of the household called 9-1-1 and told emergency officials that her family was having trouble staying conscious.

"When (firefighters) arrived at the door... at first they couldn’t get any response and finally a woman came stumbling to the door, opened the door, and collapsed in front of them. She was basically was able to tell the firefighters that her family upstairs were also in and out of consciousness," Capt. Ron Jones said.

"The baby was crying at this point as well. Firefighters rushed in, brought the baby out and then two of them assisted to bring the husband out of the house."

Paramedics say all three occupants of the home were taken to hospital suffering from apparent CO exposure.

Fire crews shut off the gas to the house and notified the Technical Safety and Standards Authority.

Toronto police said the CO detector had gone off last week but at some point, the homeowners reportedly disconnected the battery because the device kept going off.

The home was ventilated and cleared of carbon monoxide at around 3 a.m. this morning.

Enbridge is on scene as well as the TSSA, which will be investigating how the substance got in to the home.
