A street in Toronto’s downtown core has been shut down after large chunks of ice fell from the C.N. Tower.

Simcoe Street has been closed from Bremner Boulevard to Front Street because of the falling ice, Toronto police said Saturday night.

Fist-sized chunks of falling ice were first noticed by passersby at around 9:30 p.m., Sgt. Rob McDougall told CP24.

“That hits you in the head, it’s going to likely kill you,” McDougall said. “So we’re trying to keep people away from this area just to avoid anyone getting hurt.”

He said the falling ice had tapered off by 11 p.m., but had been much more frequent earlier on.

“There was a period where it was almost like a rain shower, with very large sheets of ice, anywhere from six inches to a couple of feet in size,” McDougall said.

The road east of the landmark has been closed to both pedestrians and vehicles and a nearby hotel has told guests to stay inside until police can ensure that the area is safe.

“These sheets of ice – they can travel for a couple of hundred metres and we don’t know where they’ll land,” McDougall said.

The falling ice comes amid climbing temperatures. A temperature of 4 C was recorded in the city Saturday evening and the temperature is expected to climb to a spring-like high of 10 C on Sunday.
