New homes that were under construction in a Richmond Hill subdivision were damaged in a suspicious fire overnight, police and fire officials say.

Firefighters were called to the blaze on Gracedale Drive, near Yonge Street and Elgin Mills Road, at about 4:50 a.m. Monday after a resident smelled smoke while he or she was out for a walk.

Fire crews quickly extinguished the flames inside two neighbouring homes, the fire official told CP24.

Both homes are valued at $1 million each and were almost complete. This is the second time in as many weeks one of the two homes has been damaged in a suspicious fire, said CP24 reporter Cam Woolley.

No injuries were reported.

Anyone with information is asked to call York Regional at 1-866-876-5423 ext. 7241 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Richmond Hill Fire Chief Steve Kraft said there doesn’t appear to be a link between Monday’s fire and a large fire that damaged nine unfinished houses in the same area in May.
