A four-year-old girl has died after being struck by a vehicle in Markham Thursday afternoon.

It happened at Fieldside Street and Riverwalk Drive, near David Suzuki Public School, shortly before 2 p.m.

According to police, two children – both girls – were struck as they were crossing the street with their mother.

The four-year-old girl was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

“Sadly, that child has succumbed to those injuries,” York Regional Police Const. Andy Pattenden said at the scene.

She has been identified by family and friends as Arisha Ahmed.

Her seven-year-old sister was transported to hospital with serious injuries.

The children live in the area and attend the school, police confirmed.

The female driver involved in the incident remained at the scene.

“They are speaking with officers at this time,” Pattenden said Thursday afternoon.

Speaking with CP24, an area resident said the incident was ‘upsetting.’

“There’s a lot of traffic, and a lot of people fly down like there’s no speed limit,” the man, who identified himself only as Sam, said.

“We’ve actually complained to the city before. Having this happen, maybe somebody will wake up and do something about it.”

The area was closed for several hours as police investigated. It has since reopened.

“Right now, we’re appealing to anyone that might have seen anything in this area, who might have seen the collision, that haven’t spoken with our investigators yet to please come forward right away,” Pattenden said.
