A German Shepherd named Katie that was rescued from subway tracks south of Davisville Station Tuesday afternoon has been put down, her owner tells CTV News.

Subway trains were stopped at Davisville Station shortly after 1:30 p.m. and passengers were told it was for a report of an injured animal.

Power to the rail was cut to allow the TTC’s special constables to get close enough to the dog to free it. TTC spokesperson Brad Ross told CP24 the dog is still alive. The TTC later said the dog is in serious condition.

At about 3:30 p.m., the dog was taken by animal services workers from a subway tunnel on a stretcher. It was placed in a police cruiser and driven to a vet. The dog could be seen moving its head inside a police cruiser. At about 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Katie's owner told CTV News the dog was put down. Katie was four-and-a half years old.

Ross said Katie's owner was searching for her for most of the day, and headed to Davisville station after first hearing hearing about the incident.

Mary Lou Leiher from Toronto Animal Services says Katie's owner called to report her dog missing on Tuesday morning. She said they were able to re-connect Katie with her owner quickly because of this call.

Trains turned back at Eglinton and Bloor-Yonge stations to allow for the rescue. Shuttle buses were called in to carry passengers.

Service on Line 1 resumed by 4 p.m.
