TORONTO - An inquest will be held into the death of a 38-year-old man who was shot after he stabbed a Toronto police officer who was arresting him.

Peter Lumanglas died on April 20, 2012, at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, five days after the altercation with Const. Jeff Blair, who survived knife wounds to his arms and neck.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit cleared Blair in Lumanglas's death in July 2012, saying the officer believed his life was in danger and had the authority to use lethal force.

The inquest, which is mandatory under the Coroners Act, is to begin May 12 in Toronto and is expected to last two weeks and hear from about 15 witnesses.

The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

The SIU said Blair was arresting Lumanglas for dangerous driving and failing to stop for police when Lumanglas stabbed Blair three times with a pocket knife before the officer stepped back, drew his gun and fired several times.
