A 23-year-old Toronto man is facing a string of charges after a woman and a dog were shot in the city’s east end Wednesday morning.

It happened at around 7:30 a.m. inside a home on Woodgarden Crescent near Lawrence and Morningside avenues.

Police allege the suspect shot the 34-year-old woman in the knee and the bull mastiff in the neck

The woman then fled the home and called police to report the incident. Investigators say this was not a random attack and that the man and woman were acquainted.

Neither the woman nor Duchess the dog are believed to have suffered life-threatening injuries.

A suspect was arrested a few hours later by OPP officers while on board a bus en route to Ottawa.

Andrew Toye is charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, killing or injuring an animal other than cattle and a number of firearm and drug related charges.

He was scheduled to appear in court Thursday morning.
