One of three people hospitalized following a multi-vehicle collision in Richmond Hill this morning is in life-threatening condition, York Regional Police confirm.

It happened near the intersection of 16th Avenue and Leslie Street at around 6:30 a.m.

Five vehicles were involved in the crash and the male driver of a pickup truck was found at the scene without vital signs.

Paramedics confirmed that the man was revived and rushed to hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

The driver of the truck, who has been identified as a 38-year-old man from Port Perry, was the lone occupant of the vehicle.

Two female drivers who were also involved in the crash were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Const. Andy Pattenden said the cause of the crash is not yet clear.

"It is going to take investigators quite a while to piece through this," Pattenden told reporters, adding that there is a great deal of evidence at the scene of the crash.

"It is definitely a large scene."

He added that Sixteenth Avenue has been shut down in both directions between Vogell Road and Leslie Street. The closure is expected to last several hours.

"There was a sign that was struck around Vogell Road, which is a significant distance from where the end of the collision has taken place," Pattenden said.

"Right now our investigators are still going to work through and figure out exactly what happened and what we really need right now is witnesses who might have seen this to please come forward."

He said anyone with information should contact York Regional Police's major collision investigation unit.
