A protest at Pearson Airport this morning could make a busy day even busier for those returning from March Break.

Unifor -- Canada's largest private sector union -- is planning an information picket at Terminal One and Terminal Three between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. and then again between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The union, representing more than 250 Swissport employees, is upset over plans by the Greater Toronto Airports Authority to switch to a new company to help passengers with special needs.

The GTAA’s process calls for the retendering of the contract every three years to different employers.

“The effect on workers is that every three years they start at the bottom – again,” the union’s president Cheryl Robinson said in a news release Friday morning. “They lose their seniority, go back to minimum wage and often lose their hard-won benefits.  If they get re-hired by the new employer, they have to be re-interviewed for a job they have done for years, hoping to be re-hired.”

Today's disruption comes as many families begin to return from March Break, making it one of the airport’s busiest days of the year.
