A 24-year-old man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for attempted murder in connection with a shooting at an Etobicoke strip club in December has surrendered, police have confirmed.

The update comes just hours after police identified the suspect at a press conference.

On Tuesday morning, Toronto police Insp. Shaun Narine told reporters that a man was shot after leaving the House of Lancaster Gentlemen’s Club, located at 689 The Queensway, in the early hour of Dec. 30, 2014.

While waiting for a ride home in a nearby parking lot, an unknown assailant approached the victim and shot him in the head and the left calf.

Narine said the victim was rushed to hospital via emergency run and underwent several surgeries.

“He is still suffering from the results of his injuries,” Narine said, adding the victim has permanent brain damage because of the gunshot wound he sustained to his head.

The shooting was allegedly sparked by a dispute or argument that occurred outside the venue, which was hosting a nightclub-style event that night. Five paid duty police officers were working outside the club that night, Narine said.

After the Dec. 30 shooting, police decided not to provide paid duty officers for security any longer as the nightclub-style events there were “frequented by people known throughout the city for their involvement in criminal activity,” Narine said.

Suspect Mohamud Yousef Omar turned himself in shortly before 6 p.m., Toronto police confirmed in a tweet.

He was also wanted for aggravated assault, and several other firearms-related offences.

The link between Omar and the victim is still under investigation. Narine would not say if a firearm had been recovered.

Anyone with information that could help locate Omar is asked to call police at 416-808-2200 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-8477.
