Toronto police have issued a public safety alert about a telephone scam in which fraudsters purport to be with the Canadian Revenue Agency and then demand thousands of dollars in back taxes from unsuspecting victims.

According to police, the suspects contact the victims over the phone and identify themselves as CRA agents.

At that point, the suspects inform the victims that they owe the CRA about $5,000 in back taxes and must make immediate payment by credit card.

If the victim refuses to pay, police say the suspects then threaten him or her with immediate arrest or deportation.

Police say the male suspect are described as having heavy south east asian or Caribbean accents.

Anyone with information about the scam is asked to contact police at (416) 808-3100 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at (416) 222-TIPS (8477).
