Toronto police say a 24-year-old man faces a dozen charges after a rifle and thousands of rounds of ammunition was seized in connection with a shooting on Monday in Scarborough’s Rouge Hill neighbourhood.

Police say that on Monday at 12:25 p.m., they were called to the intersection of Dean Park Road and Meadowvale Avenue for a report of shots fired.

Det. Sgt. Gerry Heaney said shots appeared to have been fired in a laneway, and two bullets struck a nearby home. Several males were seen running away when police arrived.

No one was injured in the shooting. Heaney said “numerous” shell casings were found at the scene.

On Wednesday, uniformed officers backed up by Emergency Task Force members executed a search warrant in the same neighbourhood.

An assault-style ISSC Modern Sporting Mk. 22 rifle, along with 1,251 rounds of .22 calibre ammunition was found during the search.

Another 1,300 rounds of ammunition of various other calibres including 9mm, .45 calibre and .357 was also found during the search. The ammunition was bunched together in plastic bags.

Heaney said a 30-round magazine was found attached to the rifle.

Police originally said a drum capable of carrying up to 300 rounds was also seized. Det. Const. William Kay from 42 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau said that was not the case.

“How it’s in that picture is how it was packaged, it’s ready for sale. We’re not sure if (it was bought) that way or if (it belongs to ) the end user. It’s very troubling,” Heaney said.

Heaney said the ammunition discovered “was consistent” with shell casings and other remnants found at the shooting scene, but investigators say more ballistic and forensic testing must be completed.

Police say a suspect identified as Toronto resident Kesworth Bassaragh was arrested and charged with 12 offences including possession of a prohibited weapon and careless storage of a firearm.

He is scheduled to appear in court at 1911 Eglinton Avenue East on Thursday afternoon.
