The Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate after a fatal collision near Whitchurch-Stouffville early Sunday morning.

According to the SIU, a York Regional Police officer attempted to stop a vehicle near Highway 48 and Vandorf Sideroad at around 2 a.m. when it sped away.

Shortly after the officer initiated a pursuit of the vehicle, the SIU says it left the roadway and crashed into a ditch.

A 30-year-old man, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was then pronounced dead on scene.

The SIU has assigned four investigators and two forensic investigators to the case.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
