LINCOLN, Ont. -- Ontario's police watchdog is investigating the deaths of two people in the town of Lincoln.

The Special Investigations Unit says two officers from the Grimsby office of the Niagara Regional Police Service were called to a residence (on Epp Street) in the community on Sunday evening.

A short while after the officers entered the residence, there was a house fire.

The SIU says the officers were injured as a result and taken to hospital for treatment.

Firefighters who entered the home found the bodies of a 73-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man.

The SIU has assigned three investigators and two forensic investigators to the case.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
