Ontario’s police watchdog has been called in to investigate after a Peel Regional Police officer approached a man shortly before he was struck by a passing car in Mississauga on Tuesday night.

According to a written statement released by the Special Investigations Unit Wednesday, an officer was called to the area of Erin Mills Parkway and Burhamthorpe Road in Mississauga at around 8:20 p.m. after receiving reports of a possibly suicidal man.

Shortly after police located the man, investigators say he stepped into traffic and was struck by a passing vehicle.

The man was initially taken to Credit Valley Hospital but was later transferred to St. Michael’s Hospital with serious injuries.

Three investigators, a collision reconstructionist, and two forensic investigators have been assigned to probed the circumstances surrounding this incident.

The SIU is called in to investigate whenever police are involved in incidents resulting in death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
