York Regional Police say they are searching for four or five suspects after a jewelry store inside Vaughan Mills shopping mall was robbed on Thursday afternoon.

Const. Andy Pattenden said police were called to the mall, located east of Highway 400 and south of Rutherford Road at 12:54 p.m.

Pattenden said suspects went into the store carrying hammers and smashed glass display cases, grabbing the contents inside.

Witnesses described hearing gunshots but police say this was actually the sound of the display cases shattering.

The suspects then ran out to the parking lot and fled in several vehicles. Nobody was injured, Pattenden said.

There is a large police presence in and around the mall as officers seek out witnesses and surveillance footage.
