GO Transit riders could see quicker travel times if the government implements a new proposal unveiled Thursday.

GO Regional Express Rail would provide quicker transport on existing commuter lines throughout the day and would work toward implementing electric train service every 15 minutes on all GO lines over the next 10 years, the Liberals said Thursday.

“This competes now with the standards set in Paris and London in the United Kingdom and gives us 15 minute rapid rail service all across every corner of the GTA,” Minister of Transportation Glen Murray said at a news conference, calling the move “transformative.”

Murray said the plan would double the ridership on the GO system over the next decade and would allow a commuter to go from Union Station to the Danforth GO Station in nine minutes.

“This is about boosting our productivity, about getting and keeping our economy moving,” Premier Kathleen Wynne said. “We need this transportation system.”

The proposal is part of the new $29 billion “Moving Ontario Forward Plan,” a package of transit and infrastructure spending the Liberals have promised to roll out over the next 10 years if the provincial budget is passed May 1.
