Conservative MP Gary Breitkreuz will no longer be speaking at a controversial gun lobby group meeting next month, according to reports emerging on Thursday.

The MP had been listed as the keynote speaker at the annual general meeting of the Canadian Shooting Sports Association. His invitation was rescinded on Thursday following public scrutiny of one of the event's raffle prizes -- a brand new Beretta semi-automatic handgun.

A spokesperson for Toronto Mayor David Miller, who recently worked to close shooting ranges in the city, has condemned the giveaway.

Miller has been outspoken in his opposition to handgun possession and has been pushing for an outright ban on handguns. His spokesperson says offering a handgun as a prize is an insult to the families of gun crime victims across the GTA.

The event is to be held in Mississauga in April.
