Firefighters made short work of a dramatic blaze that covered the roof of a lakefront skyscraper on Thursday evening.

The fire started sometime before 5 p.m. and fire crews arrived by 5:15 p.m. The majority of the fire was knocked down by 5:30 p.m.

At the height of the fire, flames covered the roof of the building, which appeared to be covered in Astroturf.

Thick black smoke could be seen from several kilometres away, as far away as Highway 407 in the north end of the GTA and St. Catharines across Lake Ontario.

Paramedics transported two adults to hospital from the fire scene with minor injuries. It is not known if they suffered from smoke inhalation.

The building that caught fire is called Maple Condos, is about 30 storeys tall and located at 260 Queen's Quay.

Fire captain Mike Strapko spoke to CP24 just after 5 p.m. and said it was unlikely the fire would move downwards into the building.

"If it originated on the roof it's going to take a long time to move down," he said. "It travels up quicker (than down)."
