A funeral service for Mariam Makhniashvili will be held on March 24.

Friends are invited to attend the visitation at the Murray E. Newbigging Funeral Home at 733 Mt. Pleasant Rd. on Friday, March 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be held in the chapel on Saturday, March 24, at 1 p.m.

The family has asked that a donation in Mariam's name be made to a charity of the person's choice.

Father expected to attend

Miriam's father, Vakhtang Makhniashvili, is expected to attend the service.

"I anticipate that he will be there," Vahktang's lawyer Calvin Barry said in an email sent to CP24 Thursday afternoon.

Makhniashvili is currently serving a six-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to three counts of aggravated assault last year.

Makhniashvili's skeletal remains were discovered on Feb. 28 underneath the Highway 401 overpass near Yonge Street in a wooded area of the Don Valley Golf Course.

At a press conference on March 9, police said that autopsy results showed that the 17-year-old died after falling from a significant height.

Makhniashvili went missing on Sept. 14, 2009 after walking with her brother to school at Forest Hill Collegiate near Bathurst Street and Eglinton Avenue. Detectives came up with few clues about her whereabouts. Her disappearance sparked one of the largest missing persons investigation in the history of the Toronto Police Service.
