A 20-year-old woman who was found dead in a ditch near Caledon last week moved to Toronto in search of a better life, friends say.

Ontario Provincial Police are now trying to find out how Kera Freeland died and how her body wound up in the rural area north of Toronto.

Freeland's death is considered suspicious, but police won't say if it is considered a homicide.

An autopsy was scheduled to determine the cause of death.

Originally from Calgary, Freeland worked as an escort in Vancouver before she hopped on a bus in December and moved to Toronto, where she worked for Cachet Ladies, a well-known local escort agency, sources told CTV's Tamara Cherry.

Police haven't said if her involvement in that type of lifestyle has anything to do with her death.

Police previously said Freeland was last seen alive near Lake Shore Boulevard West and Queens Avenue in Etobicoke on Jan. 15. She was known to use the alias Megan Parks.

When Freeland was reported missing the following month, Toronto police circulated her photo in a public appeal for tips. At the time, police said they were concerned about her well-being, but wouldn't explain why.

The search for Freeland took a tragic turn when her remains were found in a ditch on Heart Lake Road near Caledon last Thursday.

Friends told CTV that Freeland had struggled with drug addiction in her teens and lived mostly in shelters in downtown Calgary.

They described Freeland as a good person and a "fun-loving girl" who was trying to work everything out in her life.
