An 18-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after a Toronto police officer was struck and dragged by a vehicle during a traffic stop early Thursday morning.

Police said the incident occurred when multiple officers stopped a vehicle and attempted to arrest its driver on Pharmacy Avenue, north of Danforth Avenue, at about 12:45 a.m.

The driver is accused of putting the car in reverse at a high rate of speed and hitting an officer, who was pinned under one of the car's doors and dragged for about 75 metres.

The car continued to reverse until it flipped onto its side on some grass, police said.

Police arrested a suspect nearby as he attempted to flee, according to a news release.

The officer was transported to hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries.

In addition to attempted murder, Stephan Cummings is charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm, failing to stop for police and failing to comply with probation.

The Toronto resident was scheduled to appear in court Thursday morning.
