An automobile altercation believed to be caused by road rage sent two vehicles hurtling toward the Humber River on Saturday.

Police say the two vehicles were travelling near Stephen Drive -- on the west side of the river, north of the Queensway -- when one bumped into the other. The cars were travelling about 90 kilometres per hour at the time.

Both vehicles spun out of control, one coming to rest on the edge of the ravine at the end of Stephen Drive. The other plunged 25 metres into the river, where it remained submerged with just one wheel visible on Saturday evening.

The driver of the car that ended up in the river was able to make to shore on her own and was taken to hospital. Her injuries are not considered life threatening.

The other driver says he was the victim in the bizarre crash.

Police say they are treating the incident as a probable case of road rage. They also say the female motorist will be charged with impaired driving.
