A child has been transported to hospital with serious injuries after being attacked by a dog in Scarborough.

It happened in the Conlins and Good roads area, south of Highway 401, at around 6 p.m.

According to a series of tweets from Toronto police, the animal had the child by the neck at one point and would not let go.

The dog was shot by police in order to free the child.

The victim – originally described by police as a girl, but later corrected to a boy – was transported to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, paramedics said. He sustained several bite wounds.

One officer was also bitten trying to free the boy, police said. Their injuries were described as minor.

Police continue to investigate.
