Environment Canada has confirmed that it was tornado that touched down in Goderich Sunday, overturning cars, knocking down trees and damaging buildings.

The tornado was rated a three on the five-point Fujita tornado intensity scale.

The tornado, which packed winds of up to 280 kilometres an hour, landed at 4 p.m. and continued southeastward to Sumerhill.

The track of the tornado was about 20 kilometres with a width of about 500 metres.

The bulk of damage from the storm occurred in Goderich, Environment Canada said Monday. One person died as a result.

The national weather agency is also investigating a second potential tornado that occurred in Gananoque around 12:45 p.m. Sunday.
