Firefighters have brought a large five-alarm fire at a meat shop under control Tuesday, nearly five hours after it started.

Police at 41 Division say they received a call for the blaze at 2:23 p.m. and arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof of Vienna Fine Foods, near Birchmount Road and Eglinton Avenue Tuesday afternoon.

The building was evacuated and it's believed the fire started in the smoke house inside the facility, Toronto Fire division commander Lorne Buckingham says.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze on the first floor, but the flames had already spread to the roof, Buckingham says.

Holes had to be cut in the roof to allow jets of water to flow inside, and crews finally managed to contain the blaze to a corner of the plant before extinguishing it completely, he adds.

"There's an awful lot of damage here," he told CP24 from the scene Tuesday evening.

Buckingham says at one point there were 26 fire trucks and 92 firefighters at the scene.

No injuries have been reported, but a small team of firefighters will remain on the scene overnight to watch over the ashes.

Elsewhere in the city, firefighters also responded to a two-alarm blaze near Dufferin Street and Finch Avenue at a peanut processing plant.

District Chief Stephan Powell says surrounding buildings were evacuated and no injuries were reported.
