Ministry of Labour officials are returning to the scene of a fatal construction accident Wednesday to figure out what caused a drilling rig to topple.

Kyle Knox, 24, of Stoufville, died at the scene and five others were injured in the workplace accident at York University on Tuesday afternoon.

The man's body was removed from the scene early Wednesday morning. His name hasn't been released.

The equipment collapse occurred near York and Ian MacDonald boulevards, where crews are building a TTC subway station as part of a subway expansion project.

A second worker who was trapped for several hours was eventually freed and transported to hospital with leg injuries.

Police Sgt. Simon Fraser said firefighters and paramedics saved the man's life with their "heroic" efforts to free him and provide medical care at the scene, and to stabilize the toppled piece of machinery.

Work on the project has been halted because of the fatal accident.

No students were injured in the incident, which occurred during fall reading week, a time when students get a break from classes.

TTC diversions

Because of the incident, York and Ian MacDonald boulevards are closed for the investigation.

As a result, the following TTC bus routes are diverting around the scene: 35E, 41, 60, 106, 108, and 196.

The 196, 106 and 107 buses are diverting via Keele Street and The Pond Road, the 60 bus is diverting via Petrolia Road and Canarctic Drive, the 41 bus is diverting via Four Winds Drive to The Pond Road, and the 35 is diverting via Murray Ross Parkway and Shoreham Drive.

GO Transit buses providing service to the university are also on diversion.
