A 25-year-old man is dead and five others were injured after a drilling rig collapsed at York University Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the equipment collapse occurred on a TTC construction site located at York Boulevard and James Gillies Street at around 2:30 p.m.

The 25-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. He was still buried in the debris when the last of the injured was removed late Tuesday afternoon.

The victim's name was not immediately released.

A second man that had been trapped for several hours in the debris was eventually freed and transported to hospital with leg injuries, police said.

Police said that four other people were also transported to hospital, one with head injuries and the other three with minor injuries.

No students were injured in the incident.

There is no word on what may have caused the collapse.

The Ministry of Labour is now investigating the incident.
