Those who have been saving their calories this summer for the CNE are finally getting a look at how they might spend them with the annual exhibition set to get underway.

Opening Friday, August 16 and running through to Sept. 2, this year’s event features an array of culinary creations that are sure to raise an eyebrow or two.

This year’s offerings include nutella fries, nutella spring rolls, spice-cream cones (vanilla ice cream covered in bacon bits and nutella) and the cronut burger – a cross between a doughnut, a croissant and ground chuck.

Those sticking with their diets can explore new self-serve frozen yogurt and Greek yogurt options.

As always, The Ex is promising thrills as well.

For $30, a new CNE zipline will allow dare-devils to hop off a 126-foot platform to cruise 1,100 feet over the midway and land at the southwest corner of the Direct Energy Centre. The new attraction promises a bird’s eye view of The Ex and “the time of your life.”

However organizers have anticipated your wants if you’d rather watch others soar through the air from the safety of the ground. The Flying Wallendas – the same family as daredevil Nik Wallenda – will be performing on Princes' Boulevard, south of Hall C of the Direct Energy Centre. The family – known for an eight-person, three-level tightrope pyramid, performed without the use of safety devices – will be performing twice daily.

Tic Toc, a new show created by Cirque du Soleil veteran Daniel Cola, also promises to thrill. It uses acrobats, jugglers, trapeze and trampoline artists to explore the theme of ‘time.’

Those looking for a mind-bending experience might want to check out “Mind Kontrol,” an interactive show that blends comedy, magic, mentalism and psychological illusions.

A number of musical acts are also set to grace the Bandshell stage. Opening weekend acts include The New Pornographers with Cuff the Duke on Aug. 17 and The Beach Boys with Brother Dube Aug. 18.

As always, The Ex will close with an airshow labour day weekend, with a rehearsal set for Aug. 30.
