A funeral was held at an Etobicoke mosque Monday afternoon for a 17-year-old girl who was fatally struck by a car driven by her older sister.

Fartun Abdulle died in hospital after she was hit by a Toyota Camry while walking on a sidewalk on Attwell Drive, south of Marmac Drive, on Saturday night.

Before the funeral, cousin Hibaq Gelle said the young women “were the best of friends who loved each other deeply.”

Abdulle was in her final year of high school and was looking forward to attending university, her cousin said.

“She would do anything in the world for her siblings and was like a second mother who assisted in caring and nurturing for them,” Gelle said.

Friends described the Brampton teen as a kind young woman who had a bright smile.

“She was a nice person,” said friend Ayan Wehlawe before attending the funeral at the Masjid Khalid Bin Al-Walid mosque. “She took care of her family members and she was a good member of society.”

Gelle described the older sister - one of nine children in the family - as a sweet, caring and mature woman who was "18 going on 30" due to her leadership and maturity.

Before the collision, Abdulle was a passenger in the vehicle which was being driven by her 18-year-old sister. After she exited the vehicle, she walked along a sidewalk and was hit by the car when it mounted the curb and left the road.

Toronto police continue to investigate the incident to determine if charges are warranted.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 416−808−1900 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416−222−TIPS (8477).
