A North York couple was taken into police custody after their child died during the Thanksgiving long weekend.

Police have not confirmed many details in the investigation but neighbours told CTV News that the parents were led out of the home in handcuffs on Sunday after an ambulance had been called to the townhouse.

The couple, who cannot be identified under a court-ordered publication ban, appeared in court Tuesday, each facing a charge of failing to provide the necessities of life.

On Tuesday morning, police could be seen outside the couple’s townhouse, near Finch Avenue East and Leslie Street, where the pair reportedly live with their two children.

Police would not say what was found inside the home but sources told CTV about allegations that a young child was forced to stand against a hallway wall for hours as punishment. The child eventually collapsed.
