The Toronto Wildlife Centre is trying to capture a sick coyote that has been spotted in Scarborough within the past week.

The centre’s executive director Nathalie Karvonen said they have received several calls from members of the public, concerned about being injured by the animal. She said the animal is suffering from a potentially fatal condition called mange but poses no threat to members of the community.

If the animal is not caught and treated, it will eventually die from the disease, which causes skin infections and compromises the animal’s ability to hunt, Karvonen said.

The animal is believed to be part of a Ministry of Natural Resources study and was seen wearing a collar with a GPS tracker.

The centre is working with the Ministry to try to track down the animal, tranquilize it and take it in for treatment.
