The GTA may be in for even more wet weather in the coming days.

Much of southern Ontario could see thunderstorms and heavy downpours Thursday night and Friday, Environment Canada said in a special weather statement issued Thursday afternoon.

“An upper disturbance will move over southern Ontario from the northwest and trigger isolated thunderstorms tonight and Friday,” the agency said on its website. “With a very moist air mass in place, some of these slow-moving thunderstorms could produce local rainfall amounts of 40 mm or more.”

In Toronto, there’s a 40 per cent chance of showers with a risk of thunderstorms Thursday night. Showers are expected Friday morning as well and will continue until midnight with a risk of thunderstorms in the evening. Environment Canada says the city could see as much as 40 millimetres of rain Friday.

The rainy forecast comes after several days of intense heat that saw Toronto issue an extreme heat alert for Monday and Tuesday. The advisory was downgraded to a regular heat alert Wednesday morning and cancelled Thursday.

While temperatures remain warm, with a high of 27 C Thursday - feeling like 34 C with humidity - the mercury is set to dip to a low of 19 C Thursday evening.

A high of just 21 C and a low of 17 C is expected in Toronto Friday.
