The TTC is exploring the idea of using express buses on busy routes, as the public transit agency looks for ways to combat overcrowding.

At Wednesday’s board meeting, TTC commissioners approved a study proposed by Coun. Josh Colle, a board member who believes additional express buses could be an inexpensive way to ease congestion, the Toronto Star reported.

One of the routes being considered is 29 Dufferin.

City staff will report back to the TTC’s 11-member board once the study is complete.

Colle said the costs would be limited to adding more buses and operators, and the study will look at whether the express buses would work within the existing fare structure or whether riders would be required to pay an additional fare, the Star reported.

The TTC already runs express buses on nearly two dozen routes, but most of them are limited to the morning and afternoon commutes on weekdays. The exceptions are all-day “rocket” buses that run to places such as Pearson International Airport and York University.

Riders must pay an additional fare to board downtown express buses that operate on five routes.
