Fire crews battle house fires in Vaughan

Vaughan firefighters escaped serious injury when part of a house collapsed while they were attacking a blaze Thursday afternoon.

Fire officials said everyone escaped the detached house, near Vellore Woods Boulevard and Major Mackenzie Drive, without injuries when the fire broke out at about noon.

Neighbouring homes were also evacuated as a precaution.

It's believed the blaze started when a car in the garage caught fire and flames spread to the house.

This was the second house fire to occur in Vaughan in as many hours.

Earlier, firefighters were called to a home after a fire began at around 10:15 a.m. on the top floor of a home on Portsmouth Road, near Jane Sreet and Teston Road. Flames quickly spread to the attic.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries, a fire official told CP24.

Car found in Lake Ontario

Toronto police are investigating after an unoccupied car was found submerged in Lake Ontario by passersby Thursday morning.

People who were walking their dogs called 911 after spotting the roof of the car protruding from the water about 10 metres off the beach at Marie Curtis Park, which is located on the boundary of Toronto and Mississauga.

As a precaution, firefighters and paramedics responded along with police, but no one was inside the vehicle.

The car was pulled out of the lake and towed away. It's not known how long it had been in the lake after it was driven into the water.

Police are investigating whether the car was stolen.
