One man dead following Newmarket crash

One man is dead following a two-vehicle collision in Newmarket on Monday.

On Monday, just before 5 p.m., a 2007 Honda Santa Fe was travelling east on Davis Drive when in struck a 1997 Honda Civic travelling northbound on Prospect Street.

The driver of the Civic, a 26-year-old Newmarket man, was transported to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The man's name has not been released.

The driver of the Santa Fe, a 46-year-old woman, was transported to hospital with minor injuries.

Police continue to investigate the cause of the collision.

Parachutist becomes stuck in tree

A parachutist is back on solid ground after he became stuck in a tree in the city's east end Tuesday afternoon.

The mishap drew a response from firefighters, paramedics and police officers to Fordover Drive, near Morningside Drive and Guildwood Parkway, shortly after 12:40 p.m.

By the time most emergency personnel arrived at the scene, the man had climbed down from the tree and was reported to be in fine condition.

Firefighters were sending a ladder truck to the scene, just in case the man needed help coming back down to Earth.

House fire in the Beaches

Emergency crews responded to a house fire in the Beaches, near Queen Street East and Woodbine Avenue, Tuesday morning.

Smoke was seen billowing from the roof and from a basement window on Wineva Avenue just before 11:30 a.m.

Toronto Fire Services told CP24 that they received a call for trouble with a gas fireplace. Crews believe the incident was caused by a piece of piping that caught on fire and spread onto the walls.

Firefighters reported seeing few flames but lots of smoke. The fire was quickly put under control.

The occupant of the home was not injured.
