A 46-year-old man is charged with second-degree murder in the stabbing death of his wife in Mississauga on Tuesday.

Peel Regional Police identified the 43-year-old victim as Maria Rosario Avidago. She is the region's third homicide victim of 2011.

Police say her husband, Victor Avidago, is in custody.

Maria Avidago was stabbed at a home on Longford Drive on Tuesday afternoon.

When police arrived, they encountered a knife-wielding man and found the woman with life-threatening injuries and obvious signs of trauma to her body.

Officers Tasered the man to disarm and bring him into custody.

Maria Avidago was rushed to a hospital, where she died of her injuries.

Homicide detectives continue to investigate.
