CARSON, Calif. -- A bad start and costly mistakes hurt Toronto FC on Saturday night.
Robbie Keane scored his third-career hat trick as the Los Angeles Galaxy shutout Toronto 4-0.
"We got off to a wrong start by giving up a PK goal 8 minutes in, I haven't seen it so I don't have an opinion, but we got off on the wrong side of it," said TFC coach Greg Vanney.
Keane, who had two hat tricks in the 2013 season, opened the scoring on a penalty kick in the ninth minute.
After he buried a cross from Baggio Husidic in the 41st, Keane intercepted Justin Morrow's back pass from near midfield and slipped past goalkeeper Chris Konopka to make it 3-0 about 18 minutes later.
Sebastian Lletget rounded out the attack in stoppage time for the Galaxy (8-6-7).
"There were far too many mistakes on both sides of the ball to be able to come into this stadium against this team and get a result," said Vanney. "A lot of things defensively and offensively were just too loose.
"They are a good team. They are an experienced team and they exploited the weaknesses we had on the day for sure so credit to them."
Toronto (7-7-2) only managed to get three shots on Los Angeles goalkeeper Brian Rowe. Rowe filled in for goalkeeper Jaime Penedo, who is playing for Panama in international competition, and earned his second shutout of the season for Los Angeles.
Konopka faced seven shots from the Galaxy and made three saves.
L.A., are 5-0-5 in its last 10 league matches with Toronto dating to 2008.
Saturday's game marked a milestone for TFC midfielder Jay Chapman, who was making his first career MLS start.
Chapman played 70 minutes and committed a foul.
"I think it (debut) was okay from my personal stand point but obviously I would like to have got the win with my first start but personally I think I did alright," said Chapman.
