Toronto Blue Jays fans were giddy on Saturday and had dreams of a World Series title dancing in their heads after seeing their team break a 22 year playoff drought.
"It's been a long time since they made the playoffs," said long-time fan Paul Niekus, who added he was ecstatic.
Although he has been a fan for 15 years, Niekus has never seen the Jays play a post-season game. It's the team's first time in the playoffs since they won the World Series in 1993.
Canada's only Major League Baseball team clinched at least a spot in the American League wild-card game after beating the Tampa Bay Rays 5-3 on Friday. They bolstered their chances of taking the American League East division title on Saturday by beating the Rays again, this time 10-8.
"Hopefully they'll get to the World Series," said Jonathan Keyes, who's been a casual Jays fan since Canada's other team, the now defunct Montreal Expos, played their last MLB game in 2004. "Well, I shouldn't say I hope so. I should say I think so."
"It's great to see a...Toronto team doing it good out there," he said.
Keyes said he's "a little bit" of a bandwagon fan, but he doesn't see anything wrong with that.
"The more fans, the better it is, right?" he added.
Not necessarily, some say, as tickets are increasingly hard to come by. When post-season tickets went on sale last week, most of the available ones were sold out within two hours according to some reports.
The Jays will play their last regular-season home game Sunday against the Rays in front of a sold-out crowd at Toronto's Rogers Centre.
