TORONTO -- With Joffrey Lupul out indefinitely with a broken bone in his hand, the Toronto Maple Leafs have recalled centre Sam Carrick from the American Hockey League's Marlies.

Carrick could make his NHL debut Saturday night against the Chicago Blackhawks at Air Canada Centre.

The 22-year-old who was a fifth-round pick of the Leafs in 2010 and had an impressive training camp before being assigned to the minors.

Lupul, who was injured in Thursday's practice, missed Friday night's victory at the Columbus Blue Jackets and general manager Dave Nonis said the winger could be out for a while.

If Carrick plays against the Blackhawks, Mike Santorelli could slide from centre to wing to help fill the void left by Lupul's injury.

In addition to recalling Carrick, the Leafs sent Stuart Percy back to the Marlies after he was scratched as the seventh defenceman in Columbus.
