MISSISSAUGA - Ontario's Special Investigations Unit says there are no grounds to charge Toronto police in the death of a man at Cederbrae Mall, in the city's east end.

The SIU says Kenrick McLennan, 52, complained of chest pains after being chased 300 metres Jan. 23 by employees of a No Frills store. They had stopped him for a theft investigation.

McLennan slumped forward after being placed in a police cruiser and was treated in the mall by paramedics before being taken to hospital.

He was pronounced dead a short time later.

The SIU says McLennan died of a pre-existing blood condition, exacerbated by the stress of a foot pursuit and his apprehension.

The agency says that happened before police arrived.
