Foreign affairs minister David Emerson -- who rose through the Conservative ranks after ditching the Liberals following the last election -- may be leaving public life.

There are also reports that fisheries minister Loyola Hearn will retire from politics after this session of Parliament.

Seen as one of the most seasoned politicians in the Conservative cabinet, Emerson won his seat in the Vancouver Kingsway riding as a Liberal.

His switch to the Tories when Harper offered him a cabinet post drew the ire of many of his constituents, leading to doubts that he would be reelected in the same riding.

However, reports suggest he declined the party's offers to be moved to a safely Conservative riding saying he'd had enough of the commute from British Columbia to Ottawa.

Hearn was a cabinet minister in Newfoundland and Labrador for decades before moving to federal politics with the Conservative party.

The next federal election could be called any day now, with some reports suggesting Friday or Sunday as likely days for the writ to drop.
