The Toronto Transit Commission is endorsing plans to install security screens on subway platforms, but it needs to secure funding before construction can begin on the project.

The TTC says it will include security screens in its 2011 to 2016 capital budget plans. There are estimates that the screens will cost up to $10 million per station.

However, even if the TTC gets additional funding, the suicide screens cannot be installed until Toronto's subway becomes fully automated. That is expected to happen sometime in 2013.

Last year, there were 18 subway suicide incidents in Toronto and attempted and fatal suicide attempts caused nearly 23 hours in delays.
