The Toronto Transit Commission is calling in an old friend to review its 2012 budget.

Former TTC chief general manager David Gunn is being brought in to conduct the review.

Gunn, who is retired, isn't being paid for his work, but all of his expenses will be covered.

The American-born transit guru, who ran the New York and Washington transit systems before joining the TTC for about four years in 1995, is known as a conservative manager.

Gunn was recently tapped by Mayor Rob Ford to return to the TTC, but declined because he wasn't interested in a full-time job.

The Ford administration needs to find $774 million to balance its books next year.
