A number of inappropriate messages containing foul language and crude sexual references were sent out from Subway’s official U.S. Twitter page Wednesday after the account was hacked.

A spokesperson for the company confirmed the breach to CP24.com Wednesday evening, saying the company’s Twitter account was “briefly hacked” but is back in control of the brand once again.

There were no immediate details about how the breach occurred, the spokesperson said.

A number of crude messages directed at Subway about former pitchman Jared Fogle were re-tweeted to the chain’s 2.26 million followers Wednesday afternoon.

They included foul language, references to current child sex abuse allegations against Fogle and disparaging comments about the Subway brand.

Fogle agreed Wednesday to plead guilty to the allegations against him in a deal that could still see him go to jail for more than a decade.

Subway has cut ties with the former spokesperson and has said that it will not comment further on his situation. However the chain did issue a brief comment via Twitter Wednesday amid the hack.

“Jared Fogle’s actions are inexcusable and do not represent our brand’s values. We had already ended our relationship with Jared,” the company tweeted.
