Two firefighters were taken to hospital with minor injuries following an electrical fire and explosion at a retirement residence in Oakville Thursday night.

Emergency crews were called to Palermo Village, located at 3136 Dundas St. W., near Bronte Road, for reports of smoke in the building.

“When we arrived, we had heavy smoke in the electrical room,” Oakville Fire Platoon Chief Bill Forbes said.

“The crews were inside investigating when we had a secondary explosion in the room.”

Two firefighters in the room at the time were injured and transported to hospital with minor injuries resulting from the blast, Forbes said.

The residence was evacuated as a precaution. No resident injuries were reported.

Power in the area was also temporarily shut down. It has since been restored.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
