A popular Toronto teacher fatally shot in Lawrence Heights early Tuesday morning will be remembered at a funeral service in Etobicoke Friday afternoon.

A funeral for 31-year-old Abshir Hassan will be held at the Khalid Bin Al-Walid Mosque, located at 16 Bethridge Rd., at 2 p.m.

Hassan, a supply teacher with the Toronto District School Board, was fatally shot early Tuesday morning while attending a birthday party at an apartment complex on Flemington Road, in the Lawrence Avenue West and Allen Road area.

Two others, an 18-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man, were also wounded in the shooting. Both remain in hospital in serious condition.

None of the victims were known to police, and investigators currently have no motive for the shooting.

On Thursday, Ontario’s education minister spoke about Hassan’s murder.

“By all accounts, Mr. Hassan was a beloved teacher and mentor to his students,” Liz Sandals said. “He was the sort of person we want to have teaching our students, and he will be greatly missed.”
