Toronto police say an off-duty officer followed a knife-wielding assailant after a man was stabbed in Riverdale on Tuesday night.

Const. Victor Kwong said police were called to Queen Street East and McGee Street at 7:26 p.m. for a report of two men fighting.

Kwong said one man allegedly pulled a knife and stabbed the other man. The victim suffered a laceration to his neck.

The victim then collapsed on the ground. He was taken to hospital in serious condition.

An off-duty police officer followed the suspect until more police arrived and arrested the suspect, who is 44 years old.

Queen Street East was closed for a time between Logan Avenue and McGee Street to allow for an investigation.

Kwong said it is not yet known whether the suspect has been charged.
